EnergyUp

An online assessment and report measuring health and wellbeing.

In these days of accelerating change and complexity, every person needs to keep their physical, mental, and emotional dimensions in the fittest condition. The human body is still "programmed", through our evolution, to lead the life of hunter/gatherers, but your work and your lifestyle have left that existence way behind!  You need to be ready to compensate for that mismatch.

EnergyUp shows us that the more you understand yourself, then the more you will be able to make informed choices on a daily basis that help you be successful, and that ensure your long-term health and wellbeing.

Energy Up's purpose is to provide a tool/framework and a language to examine your current approach and to consider your route forward.

The EnergyUp concept was developed by Thomas Tang.  Thomas is a veteran in corporate training, specializing in health, wellbeing, resilience, leadership and their interrelationships. In the past 15 years, he has worked with more than 150 companies and over 15,000 leaders and professionals in Asia Pacific. His consulting background began with using Lean Six Sigma for product & process design and now for people & human capital. He is also a gold medal winner of Taichi Quan.

This online assesment has been developed in partnership with Tony Wright at Vibble, to create an easy-to-read and practical framework with top tips for staying healthy, happy and functional in all aspects of our lives, both personal and professional.

The tool measures 3 "capacities" and 4 "tactics" which all combine to ensure a healthy life.

The Three Capacities

The three capacities are the core areas which you need to focus on for health and wellbeing.  HEAT, SMART and INSIGHT.

HEAT comes from the Chinese concept of “JÄ«ng” (ç²¾).

It is all about the way we look after our bodies and it is the foundation of energy and physical well-being.

It covers our diet or in other words the fuel that we provide for our bodies.

It entails the exercise and movement which we use our bodies for and it also includes the rest and the sleep that we take to help the body recover.

An example – if you eat carefully, exercise well and rest and sleep well, than you probably have are strong in the HEAT element.

Energy Up starts with HEAT

SMART comes from the Chinese “Qi” (æ°”) which is the “invisible life force which enables the body to think and feel”.

It is all about how our thinking processes and our emotional intelligence affect our feelings, emotions and choices.  Where Jing is tangible,

Qi is hidden.  It is about the connection between the heart and the head.

It is also about our ability to fall into “thinking traps” and to understand our experiences and the situations we encounter accurately without interference from false or unhelpful beliefs.

An example - If you spend time reflecting (or perhaps meditating) on your thoughts, where they come from and how well they serve you then you are probably stong in the SMART element.

SMART is the “backbone” of Energy Up

INSIGHT comes from the Chinese concept of shen (神) and is

best thought of as your “spirit”.

It is perhaps initially the most difficult of the 3 capacities to grasp

It includes your thoughts about your purpose, in other words “what are you here for?” and is sometimes

referred to as being “beyond body and mind”.

It is about the way that you lead your life and what gives you joy, satisfaction and a sense of fulfillment.

It can be thought of as “the spirit in action”. It is, therefore, the expression of the combination of your

body and your mind, and it is manifested in the way you feel about yourself, the way that you feel about

the world around you, and the way you interact with it.

It is about your internal relationship with concepts such as wisdom, love, compassion, kindness, generosity, acceptance, forgiveness and tolerance.  It is then also about the way you let that out into the world around you.

An example -  If you have genuine and authentic commitment to help other people and the world around you then it is probably rooted in a strong level of INSIGHT.  Unlike SMART, which remains hidden, INSIGHT is observable and can be perceived as “real” by others.

The Four Tactics.

Each of the three capacities can also be broken down into four tactics for the way that you can achieve that capacity.  They represent ascending levels of achievement and ability.

Notice: A learnt ability to pay attention to oneself.  In other words how good are you at noticing your physical and emotional state.

Care: A practical start-up skill to look after oneself.  e.g. the basic skills need to maintain a healthy mind and body.

Master: A more sophisticated framework of skills to sustain the self-care plan.  i.e. are you literally able to be a master of the skills and abilities that are required.

Cure: The ability to bounce-back and recover.   In other words your ability to recover from a drop in your physical and mental health, to heal yourself and to get back on track.
